I used to not like this word, mainly because I associated it with too many commercials about how we need to invest in these pills or vitamins or $120 work out attire. Wellness was just a marketing term I would scoff at while spoon deep into some chocolate ice cream. I thought that as long as I wasn’t dying, I’ll be fine. As the phrase goes, why fix what ain’t broke? I lived with this mentality until the ice cream started to hit my belly and older age brought down my metabolism. My energy levels wore down and my weight went up. Mentally, I was stressed about life and began to wonder if maybe there was more that needed to happen with my wellness.
I took small steps towards bettering myself — which I again stress is important in maintaining healthy habits and not just trends — by reducing sweets. From there I focused on sleep a little but didn’t see too much in terms of change. I went back to my old ways and honestly, it wasn’t till months after starting this blog that I really understood Wellness and how vital it is. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally is time consuming and often that time is spent thinking of what’s next. This leads most to not take this time or to heavily reduce it. We like those ten minute yoga sessions online because they fit into our schedule and we can say, “I did yoga today!” Hey, I’m happy to hear that! It’s a small step towards your wellness and that’s something worth praise. But don’t stop at that small step. Add another session maybe after work or before you go to bed. Once comfortable with that step, add another step. When you are being active for that short window, focus on breathing. Focus on form. Focus on you and not what is surrounding you.
Add these steps and take time during your day to re-focus on the two most important things: you and yourself. You might find that spark of creativity again or fire for a hobby. Take plenty of time to improve your physical self and mental self. Do this and soon, you too will like the word Wellness.
P.S.
For those looking for some guidance in this, I will make my next post going over some strategies and guides that I have learned. If there is any thing in particular you would like for me to include please comment below or send me a message.
